Indonesian Flora

Padma raksasa (Rafflesia arnoldii), known as "corpse flower",  is one of the three national flowers in Indonesia. This plant is endemic on the island of Sumatra, particularly the southern part (Bengkulu, Jambi and south Sumatra). It is noted for producing the largest individual flower on earth and a strong odor of decaying flesh. It is very difficult to grow and obligate parasite. It can only grow if there is a host plant of the Family Liana Sp.

Kenanga (Cananga odorata) or ylang-ylang is the name for a type of flowers and trees that produce it. There are two forms, namely Macrophylla, commonly known as ylang-ylang, and Genuina, known as the Philippines ylang-ylang. Cananga odorata fa. macrophylla is native to Indonesia. It is a fast-growing tree, that exceeds 15 feet per year and attains an average height of 40 feet. Its trunk is straight, with hardwood. The evergreen leaves are smooth and glossy, oval, pointed, with wavy margins, and 5–8 inch long. The flower is drooping, long-stalked, with six narrow greenish yellow (rarely pink) petals, rather like a sea star in appearance, and yields a highly fragrant essential oil.


Hartinah Orchid (Cymbidium hartinahianum), known as Tien Soeharto Orchid, is one of the orchid species that endemic only in North Sumatra. Its habitat found in Desa Baniara Tele, Kecamatan Harian, Kabupaten North Tapanuli. It grows well in the open field among the grasses and other plants such as species of ferns, tropical pitcher plants, etc. at an altitude of 1,700 meters above sea level. It has ribbon-shaped leaves tipped with a length of 50-60 cm taper. The flowers are star-shaped thick-textured. Leaf sheath and leaf crown is almost as large, yellow-green upper surface and lower surface brownish with yellow on the edges.
